MATT CAME HOME in a hurry having had to do an extra drive into town to exchange the saddle wax he had bought. How on earth had he managed to pick up the wrong jar? He’d been buying this stuff for years. He knew what the jar looked like. And still... Had another customer mixed them up on the shelf? Obviously he wouldn’t have...

Or would he? His head was so full with stuff about guests, questions about Belle’s mood now that she had suffered such a heartbreaking blow...

And April’s presence. Every time she walked through the door, he was amazed she was actually here. That she had agreed to his scheme of staying at his place. And how well she fitted in. It was almost like she hadn’t been away at all. As if they could pick up where they had left off and talk about anything.

He felt a closeness with her that he didn’t have with anyone else. A special connection. When he was away from the ranch, he looked forward to going home again to see her and ask how her day had been and... It was silly to say he suddenly had someone to come home to, because he had always had Belle and his father, but this was different somehow. So different that he apparently walked about with his head in the clouds and got the wrong saddle wax.

Shaking his head, he got out of the car and saw a young man with dark hair and a friendly face standing on his porch. He had obviously been knocking and now turned around. His face flushing red, he said, “Is Belle home?”

“I guess not. She’s busy with a library project.” Matt gestured vaguely. “Why don’t you give her a call?”

“I tried but she’s not answering her phone.”

“Oh. How odd. The thing is always glued to her hand and...” Matt froze. He eyed the young man top to bottom. “You’re not by any chance Bobby?”

“Yes, sir, I am.”

Matt felt anger spark from the core of his being and spread into every inch of him. He stood up straighter. “You have a nerve showing up here.”

“But, sir, I wanted to say...”

“Was there a bet going on about kissing my daughter?” Matt asked tightly.

“Yes, sir, but...”

“And did you receive a brand new phone as a reward for kissing her?”

“Yes, sir, but...”

“That’s all I need to know. You should be happy that I don’t grab you by the collar and throw you out of the yard.” Matt tried to speak without his voice shaking. “But I don’t want any more trouble. Just go away and never show your face here again. And think about what you did to a poor girl who...” Really cared for you? Nah, he wouldn’t give the louse the satisfaction of saying that. “Who is far more than you deserve. Now split.”

“But, sir...”

“I said go. Before I lose my temper.”

Bobby hung his head and hurried down the porch steps. He grabbed a red mountain bike leaning against the barn door and cycled off at high speed.
