MATT CAME HOME in a hurry having had to do an extra drive into town to exchange the saddle wax he had bought. How on earth had he managed to pick up the wrong jar? Heâd been buying this stuff for years. He knew what the jar looked like. And still... Had another customer mixed them up on the shelf? Obviously he wouldnât have...
Or would he? His head was so full with stuff about guests, questions about Belleâs mood now that she had suffered such a heartbreaking blow...
And Aprilâs presence. Every time she walked through the door, he was amazed she was actually here. That she had agreed to his scheme of staying at his place. And how well she fitted in. It was almost like she hadnât been away at all. As if they could pick up where they had left off and talk about anything.
He felt a closeness with her that he didnât have with anyone else. A special connection. When he was away from the ranch, he looked forward to going home again to see her and ask how her day had been and... It was silly to say he suddenly had someone to come home to, because he had always had Belle and his father, but this was different somehow. So different that he apparently walked about with his head in the clouds and got the wrong saddle wax.
Shaking his head, he got out of the car and saw a young man with dark hair and a friendly face standing on his porch. He had obviously been knocking and now turned around. His face flushing red, he said, âIs Belle home?â
âI guess not. Sheâs busy with a library project.â Matt gestured vaguely. âWhy donât you give her a call?â
âI tried but sheâs not answering her phone.â
âOh. How odd. The thing is always glued to her hand and...â Matt froze. He eyed the young man top to bottom. âYouâre not by any chance Bobby?â
âYes, sir, I am.â
Matt felt anger spark from the core of his being and spread into every inch of him. He stood up straighter. âYou have a nerve showing up here.â
âBut, sir, I wanted to say...â
âWas there a bet going on about kissing my daughter?â Matt asked tightly.
âYes, sir, but...â
âAnd did you receive a brand new phone as a reward for kissing her?â
âYes, sir, but...â
âThatâs all I need to know. You should be happy that I donât grab you by the collar and throw you out of the yard.â Matt tried to speak without his voice shaking. âBut I donât want any more trouble. Just go away and never show your face here again. And think about what you did to a poor girl who...â Really cared for you? Nah, he wouldnât give the louse the satisfaction of saying that. âWho is far more than you deserve. Now split.â
âBut, sir...â
âI said go. Before I lose my temper.â
Bobby hung his head and hurried down the porch steps. He grabbed a red mountain bike leaning against the barn door and cycled off at high speed.
